About Scheme
Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen (SBM-G Phase I) was implemented by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The mission aimed to eliminate open defecation in rural India through large-scale behavioral change, awareness campaigns, and financial assistance for constructing household and community toilets.
Objectives
- Bring about mass-scale behavioral change regarding sanitation and hygiene
- Ensure construction and usage of household and community toilets
- Establish an accountable mechanism for achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) India
- Promote Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) in rural areas
Activities
- Construction of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL)
- Construction of Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs)
- Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) activities
- Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns
- Human Resource Development (HRD) and capacity building
Eligibility
The applicant must be a member of a rural household without a functional toilet prior to the scheme. Priority is given to poor, underprivileged, or marginalized families, especially those headed by women, elderly, disabled, or socio-economically weaker sections.Households already possessing functional toilets were not eligible for financial assistance under this scheme.
Benefits
Eligible rural households received financial assistance of ₹12,000 per toilet for construction. The scheme led to improved sanitation coverage, reduced open defecation, and enhanced hygiene practices across rural India.
Application Process
Offline:
Step 1: Approach the local Gram Panchayat or Swachhagrahi.
Step 2: Submit necessary documents such as Aadhaar and bank details.
Step 3: Upon verification, financial assistance is provided for toilet construction.
Step 4: The toilet is geo-tagged and verified through the Management Information System (MIS) portal.
Step 5: Incentive amount is directly credited to the beneficiary’s bank account.
